Edgeley Trivia

In 1826 part-time gardener John Jennison opened his home and gardens, including his Aviary to the general public. This small menagerie was located within the current day Alexandra Park to the public. By 1830 in need of more space, he had moved his collection of birds and other animals to the north of Manchester and founded the famous Belle Vue Zoo

Established in 1792, the Sykes Bleaching Company began as a small cotton bleaching business in Edgeley, a neighbourhood near Stockport. Over time, it grew to become one of the most significant bleaching enterprises in the United Kingdom. The town has a long history of industry and was also once home to several textile mills and factories, which were the main employer of the area during the 18th and 19th centuries. 

St Matthew’s Church was built in 1843, replacing the Brinksway Chapel, which had been built in 1823, and had earned the nickname “Beef-Steak Chapel” as it was erected with the purpose of promoting vegetarianism
